Rajahmundry: Pondichery Tourism Minister Malladi Krishna Rao launched `Clean Godavari’ programme here on Sunday along with MP Vundavalli Aruna Kumar, MLA R. Suryaprakasha Rao and Mayor Adireddy Veeraraghavamma. About 500 fishermen from Yanam were engaged in cleaning the Godavari in nine pockets. All the delegates assembled at Gouthama Ghat early in the morning and launched the programme. Mr. Krishna Rao said that the Godavari was being polluted due to garbage, waste material and industrial waste, which were being let out into the river regularly. He said that it would harm people living along the course of the river, particularly towns like Rajahmundry. He along with Union Minister Narayana Swami had a voyage in Godavari on June 7 and MP Aruna Kumar and MLA Suryaprakasha Rao were also with them. During the discussion, it was finalized to clean the river with 500 fishermen of Yanam (Krishna Rao’s home constituency). He said he would like to develop Telugu-speaking areas. He recalled that during the Gujarat earthquake and Orissa floods, they had sent rice and medical teams from Yanam. Mr. Krishna Rao said that Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy had agreed to give drinking water to Yanam through pipeline from DowleswaramYanam Municipal Chairperson D. Chandra Rao and others participated.
