Wanted, Burneys

The heart-wrenching story of Najma Parveen living in Karachi, her husband Shahid, who is in jail in India, and their five children living with their relatives in Meerut; and similar accounts of scores of other Indians and Pakistanis, many of them in jails on either side on flimsy charges, make one pray that the tribe of Ansar Burney should increase (“Calling an Ansar Burney in India,” June 13).

However, a few Ansar Burneys here and there cannot tackle the humanitarian problem. Both countries should evolve a systematic and effective state policy and institutionalised mechanisms to address it.

Shahabuddin Nadeem,

Bangalore

Both governments should evolve ways of dealing with such cases in a speedy manner. What we need are more Ansar Burneys on both sides of the border.

Mohammed Ayaz Qureshi,

Chennai
