NAGAPATTINAM: Several thousands of pilgrims and devotees witnessed the anointment of sandal paste at the famous Nagore Dargah performed in the early morning of Sunday, the most important event of the annual ‘Kandoori’ festival. The colourful illuminated ‘Sandanakoodu’ procession that started from Nagapattinam town on Saturday night passed through the main roads of the town and reached the Nagore Dargah in the early hours of Sunday for the anointment. Muhalli Muthavalli K. Mohamed Kalifa Sahib, Kalifa and managing trustee of the Nagore Dargah, Kazi S.A. Shaik Hassan Sahib, Hereditary Trustee of Nagore Dargah and Town Kazi, and others received the ‘Sandanakoodu’ and offered usual prayers after the anointment. The district administration in coordination with the police had made elaborate arrangements for the procession on Saturday night. Security, protected drinking water and sanitary arrangements have been made for the large number of devotees and pilgrims attending the fortnight-long festival. From other countriesThousands of pilgrims from various parts of the country and Sri Lanka, Myanmar and the Gulf have come to attend the ‘Kandoori’ festival (451st Urs Mubarak of Nagore Dargah Shariff) this year. The death anniversary of Saint Hazrath Syed Shahul Hameed Quadir Wali is being celebrated as ‘Kandoori’ festival every year. The highlight of the festival is the participation of Hindus in large numbers. Hindus along with Muslims would take bath in the ‘peerkulam’ (holy tank) in the dargah premises during the festival period. There is a strong belief that the tank water has curative powers.
