Man charred to death in vehicle

ghastly: The Maruthi Omni that caught fire on Butt road on Sunday night.
CHENNAI: An 84-year-old man was charred to death when the vehicle in which he was travelling caught fire on Butt Road here on Sunday night.
The police said Arasu, a resident of Indira Nagar, was returning home with his relatives after attending a funeral at Avadi. He was seated at the rear end of the vehicle.
A few minutes before the accident they had stopped at a tea stall. Witnesses said after they resumed their journey, there was a loud noise and the vehicle caught fire.
A woman who was seated near the door was unhurt. Four other persons, including the driver and another woman, sustained burns and were rushed to a private hospital nearby.
The Maruti Omni car, owned by a person from Injambakkam, was completely burnt. The Fire and Rescue Services Department got a call around 9.20 p.m. Two tenders rushed to the spot and doused the fire.
The remains of the man have been sent to the Government Royapettah Hospital.
