AGITATION FOR REGISTRATION: Students and parents waiting inside the District Employment Office premises in Madurai on Sunday.

MADURAI: Tension prevailed at the District Employment Office at K. Pudur here on Sunday as huge number of parents and children gathered for registration, only to find the office closed.

Following the distribution of SSLC mark sheets, arrangements were made by the District Employment Office for fresh registration. They announced the setting of five special registration camps that would function on Sunday at the five Taluks of Tirumangalam, Melur, Usilampatti, Vadipatti and Peraiyur.

However, the parents and students who gathered at the office said that newspaper announcements mentioned registration would also be done in the district and that since the K. Pudur office covered the Corporation limits, they had come.

Police and revenue department officials told them that registration would be done only at the five Taluks and not at the K. Pudur office on Sunday as it was a holiday.

However, unconvinced they began to block the road and demanded that registration be done as they could not come on Monday as it was a working day. When repeated attempts to convince them failed, top officials from the Department of Employment decided to conduct registration. Registration for all those who had turned up would be completed by three, the official said.

Tahsildhar (South), S. Arjunan, said that registration would be conducted by calling additional staff and the situation was amicably resolved.
