Sir, The bus drivers should be strictly prohibited from using mobile phones while driving. The notion that those following traffic rules in Hyderabad meet with road accidents should go. Use of musical horns while reversing vehicles is becoming a menace. Radha Raghu Bagh Amberpet Dear Mr. Raghu, Anybody caught talking on cell phone while driving has to pay a fine of Rs.500 and for driving dangerously/racing, and so on, the fine is Rs.200 to 500. Vehicle horns should be fitted with ‘mute’ switches to ensure others are not disturbed while reversing vehicles. Anyway, those who are put to such nuisance can complain to the police. Those who follow rules are neither fools nor timid. They are mature and responsible citizens. Let not wrongdoers give us a complex, as if they are smart. We must treat traffic violators in the same way as we treat other offenders. Such social censure only can bring down the premium on rash driving. There needs to be a wider consensus on closure of shops on different days in different areas, just as we have staggering of school timings or cinema timings. Sir, I hope making it mandatory for the autorickshaw owners to the following rules would bring in discipline. They cannot refuse to take passengers to any destinations. Publicise the toll free number of RTA 1074 to lodge any complaints against autorickshaw drivers. Rules should be displayed inside the three-wheeler. V. Nityanandam New Nallakunta Dear Nityanandam, Thanks for your mail. We have made it mandatory for autorickshaws and other slow moving vehicles to stick to the lane on the left. I will quote the extract of our notification, dated 10/04/2008 - “As general instruction to the mixed vehicular traffic, slow moving vehicles like autos, auto trolleys, light/medium goods vehicles and delivery vans are directed to keep to the left lane and give way to the fast moving traffic on their right. They may switch lanes about 100 feet before the intersection where they have to move from the left to the right lane or vice versa”. We have distributed special pamphlets for the auto drivers giving do’s and don’ts. A scanned copy of the same is being sent to The Hindu for forwarding it to you. Sir, Haphazard parking of vehicles on Wood Point-Ameerpet market stretch and allowing private buses during peak hours at Ameerpet is leading to traffic snarls. Hawkers near R.S. Brothers and Rythu Bazars may be minimised, if not totally removed. Training of traffic police may bring in more professionalism. Dr. Yugandhar Ameerpet Dear Mr.Yugandhar, We are trying to prevent wrong parking, especially on the ESI – Khairatabad stretch, because it is a high density corridor. Additional officers have been deployed there. Private buses are not allowed between 8.00 a.m. and 10.00 p.m. If you see any such buses during restricted timings, take a snap and send us a copy so that accountability may be fixed. Orders have been given to push the hawkers away from the roads. We are trying to make the traffic staff more professional and assertive so that people are not allowed to indulge in all sorts of violations, at least in their presence Sir, I see many city roads are uneven. A six-lane road suddenly become four-lane after some distance. Traffic flow is chaotic from JNTU to Nizampet in the absence of policemen. P. Siva Keshava Sastry Kukatpally Dear Mr. Sastri, JNTU – Nizampet Road comes under the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate. However, as road widening and flyovers are looked after by the GHMC, a copy of your mail has been sent to the Commissioner, GHMC, for necessary action. Sir Why cannot ducting be introduced for cables instead of every department digging the road at their will? G.S.R. Prasad Dear Mr. Prasad, As road maintenance and flyover construction is looked after by the GHMC, I have faxed a copy of your mail to the Commissioner, GHMC. Sir, These days, traffic police are not enforcing helmet rule strictly. Some two-wheeler riders are seen carrying helmets at the back and others carry them in hands and drive vehicles. Is enforcement of rule not uniform? Dr. Krishnamurti Dear Mr. Krishnamurti, It is not that we have given up booking riders for not wearing the helmet. You might have noticed our posters, which carry messages regarding helmets, seat belts, and so on. Those who hang the helmet over the number plate are being booked for failing to wear helmet and display vehicle’s registration number as well. We stop few vehicles during rush hours -that too- in cases of serious violations like driving in the wrong direction. But, all violations are being watched and e-challans are being sent. Sir, Why are four-way junctions like Malakpet station and Dilsukhnagar crossroads being converted into two-way intersections? Non functioning traffic lights and power failures are also causing chaos. S. Prakash Dear Mr.S. Prakash, We are introducing one way at busy intersections so that the traffic keeps moving. You will waste less time and money on fuel. Traffic signals are being rectified. Regular meetings are being held with GHMC and the Secunderabad Cantonment Board as well as the agencies maintaining the signals under them.
