KOCHI: Three tipper lorries, six covered-lorries, 16 pick-up vehicles, 38 goods autorickshaws and 213 tricycles that the Corporation of Cochin had purchased for Rs 3.75 crore, are lying idle for want of ‘sponsors,’ Opposition Leader in the Corporation of Cochin A. B. Sabu said. Addressing mediapersons here on Saturday, he said that with the civic agency not putting in place any machinery to collect segregated waste, people have gone back to the practice of mixing the two and throwing them in public places. Buckets to segregate garbage have not been distributed in most houses. The delay in putting to use brand new garbage-collection vehicles has made matters worse. “Residents and visitors to Kochi are being forced to put up with the nauseating smell of garbage because the Corporation refused to collect and treat garbage after the deadline to dump it in FACT-owned land expired at the end of May. Instead of finding an alternative or commissioning the Brahmapuram treatment plant, the Corporation put all the responsibility on the District Collector to find a new dumping site. This despite the fact that collection of garbage and its scientific disposal is the Corporation’s prime responsibility,” he said. Opposition councillors will hold a demonstration before the office of the Corporation on Tuesday, to highlight its mishandling of the crisis.
