Chennai: Police arrested 2,000 persons on various charges during raids across the city on Saturday night. Based on the directions from Chennai Police Commissioner R. Sekhar, police conducted surprise inspections. About 700 persons were taken into preventive detention while 171 of those arrested were history-sheeters. About 130 persons were arrested for anti-social activities and another 86 absconding in connection with earlier cases. The police also booked 321 people for drunk driving and 250 for rash driving. Fines were imposed on 250 motorists for not wearing helmets.
