Space for all: A view of the newly-built market complex at Woraiyur. TIRUCHI: Construction of a new Woraiyur market complex, to accommodate vendors operating on the Panchavaranswamy Temple Street, is nearing completion. The new market has been reconstructed at the Corporation’s Wallajah Road market complex which had been lying in disuse for more than a decade. The revival of the erstwhile market comes after a long wrangling over the shifting of the traders and auctioning of the rights for collection of rentals. The dilapidated market complex on Wallajah Road had become a den of anti-social elements. Vandals have removed most of the materials used in the complex such as tiles, doors and iron beams. The complex houses an Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) centre which was also not spared by the miscreants. On the other hand, the Panchavarnaswamy Temple Street, which was unofficially converted into a market by the traders, had turned highly congested. Traders, who found the place more convenient, refused to move out of the place. The Corporation has now demolished the dilapidated structures and reconstructed the entire market at an investment of about Rs.25 lakh. About 200 shops have been constructed, Commissioner T.T.Balsamy told The Hindu. Shifting of tradersAccording to K. Abishekapuram zone chairman R. Arivudainambi, who has long been demanding the reconstruction of the market, said there would not be much problem in persuading the traders to shift to the revived market. However, he said a few more shops, to accommodate grocery shops, have to be constructed and the ICDS centre has to be shifted out before the market could be opened.
