GUNTUR: The stage is set for the opening of tenders for allotment of licence to liquor shops in the district. Prohibition and Excise officials have made all arrangements for the tendering process to begin on Monday morning at the B.R. Stadium grounds. Unprecedented response
In view of the unprecedented response for licence to be given away to 342 liquor shops, police have elaborate bandobust at the stadium. As many as 2,209 applications were filed by traders, prominent politicians etc,. most of them hopeful of regaining a bonanza in terms of returns. The traders paid EMD price of 5 per cent which amounted to about Rs.2 crores. They were asked to pay one sixth of the tender price immediately after they were allotted the shop and some nationalized banks have decided to open special counters at the stadium to issue demand drafts and challans. The department has increased the minimum upset price by Rs.10 crores from the existing Rs.90 crores. Joint Collector Mr Kantilal Dande will supervise the events. Prohibition and excise deputy commissioner Diwakar and excise Guntur superintendent A Y Khureshi and other officials will monitor the allotment of shops. In all, 644 applications were filed for the 87 liquor shops in Guntur division, 524 applications for 125 shops in Tenali division and 1041 tenders were received for 130 shops in Narsaraopet division.
