Tirupati civic body to spend Rs.76 cr. for modernisation of UDS

Special Correspondent

TIRUPATI: The Tirupati Municipal Corporation (TMC) has decided to take-up modernisation of the Underground Drainage System (UDS) and also to extend the system to hitherto uncovered areas in the ever-expanding temple city.

According to the Corporation Commissioner, P. Mohan Reddy as much as Rs.76 crore would be spent for the modernisation of the under ground sewer lines spanning in all about 25 kms coming under the UDS. This is to ensure an uninterrupted flow of the drainage as well as storm water unlike at present when even mild drizzle or a small block in the sewer lines would see stinking drain water flooding the roads much to the irritation of the pedestrians. The work envisaged major repairs to the UDS lines starting from the following seven places in the city: Kapilatheertham, Alipiri, SVU main gate, NCC Quarters on the SVU campus, Vedanthapuram, Green Park Apartment and Sanskrit Vidya Peetham. It would be completed on the same lines as the ‘Malavanigundam’ channel work done in the past, Reddy said. As to the major task of decongesting the area in front of the Tirupati Railway Station he said the Corporation in coordination with the TTD, railways and the Hathiramji Mutt was taking steps to provide a second entry cum exit point to the station on the southern side close to the TTD choultries. Besides, parking lots would be developed at the existing entry/exit points to ease the congenstion at the spot.

In the ‘Dial Your Commissioner’ programme on Monday Mohan Reddy said that steps were being taken to provide electric crematorium.
