“Drink only boiled water”

Special Correspondent

NAGAPATTINAM: Nagapattinam Collector M. Jayaraman on Monday appealed to the people in the district to drink only boiled water to avoid water-borne diseases in view of the release of Mettur water from Grand Anicut in Cauvery, Vennar and Grand Anicut Canal river systems.

The Collector said that it would take a few days for the water released from Grand Anicut to reach the tail-end areas of the delta and also all the branch rivers. The fresh water flowing in the rivers will not be clean and contain dirty materials. Consuming the fresh river water will lead to all water-borne diseases like diarrhoea, etc.

He pointed out that all the panchayat unions and municipalities were instructed to clean all the overhead and other tanks and ensure supply protected drinking water to the people in all the villages.

He said that a monitoring committee consisting of doctors had been formed to take immediate action and to provide quick treatment to the people if they were affected by water-borne diseases.

Mr. Jayaraman said that all the primary health centres would provide chlorine tablets free of cost to the public and pointed out that one tablet should be mixed with 20 litres of water and it was safe to drink the water after 30 minutes.
