BU adopts PU model for exams, evaluation

Chitra V. Ramani

Bangalore: There have always been complaints about the way Bangalore University conducts examinations. There have been many criticisms about the late announcement of results and also the inconsistencies. In an attempt to ensure that examinations are conducted as per the schedule and results are announced on time, Bangalore University is keen on adopting the Pre-University Department model.

Vice-Chancellor H.A. Ranganath told The Hindu that a committee formed by the university had taken a look at the way the PU Department conducts examinations and announces results. “The system functions like clockwork. Everything is planned much in advance. We have put certain things in place this academic year,” he said.

Prof. Ranganath said that though the university makes plans ahead, much like the PU Department, the results were not announced as per schedule mainly because of the shortage of evaluators. “The number of teachers who can evaluate the papers is fewer. The PU teachers work like an army, which helps the department stick to its schedule and announce the results in time,” he said. He said that the main impediment for the university is that most of its affiliate colleges mainly have guest lecturers or temporary lecturers.

L. Radhakrishna, Registrar (Evaluation), said that another reason for the late announcement of results is that Bangalore University offers many courses and has many combinations.

Syndicate approval

Another step to ensure that the university results are announced in time is the attempt to update the list of examiners. “The present list is being updated. This exercise will help us at least find a way to overcome the problem of shortage of evaluators,” said Prof. Ranganath. “Qualified teachers from the sister universities will be invited. The matter was discussed in detail by the Syndicate, which has approved it,” he said.
