KOLLAM: Vice-Chancellor of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat) Gangan Pratap has said that the neglect of higher education is the main reason for the decline in quality of the sector in the State. Dr. Pratap was addressing a gathering here on Monday after presenting the Professor Sivaprasad Foundation Award 2008 for the best arts and science college teacher to S. Sreekumar from Christ College, Irinjalakuda. He said that Cusat was the best higher educational institution in the State and was ranked 17th in the country. Only one or two universities from India would be ranked among the best 500 universities in the world. He said that the government alone would not be able to provide finance for quality improvement. For that, reputed foundations should come forward. In his Prof. Sivaprasad commemoration address, poet Puthuserry Ramachandran said that the education sector in the State was in a crisis. Trying to keep the sector under government control was not a practical formula to overcome the crisis. “We want the government to adopt a diplomatic approach on the issue.” The function was presided over by Mayor N. Padmalochan. The award, presented for the 12th consecutive year, is instituted by the Professor S. Sivaprasad Foundation. President of the Sree Narayana Education Society K. Sasikumar spoke.
