VIRUDHUNAGAR: A total of 40 children, who were screened for heart ailments on Monday here, have been found fit for surgery.
The Deputy Director (Health), P. Vadivelan, said that 176 children from the Virudhunagar health unit district underwent second round of screening here.
“The first batch of five children will be operated upon next month. We will take up 76 children for echocardiogram test at the Government Rajaji hospital and a private hospital in Madurai soon,” he added.
Earlier, inaugurating the camp, the Minister for Backward Classes Welfare, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, said that the Chief Minister’s Ilam Sirar Irudhaya Pathugappu scheme was aimed at giving faster treatment to children with heart diseases. Otherwise, they have to wait for months together for their turn on seniority basis after registering their names.
The Government has allowed private hospitals to do the surgeries to reduce the waiting time.
The Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, said that a total of 48,052 children, 1,41,881 adults had benefited during the 256 medical camps conducted under Varumun Kapoom scheme. Medicines worth Rs.12.25 lakh have been disbursed.
The Joint Director (Health and Family Planning), Usharishabadas and Sivakasi Deputy Director (Health), S. Balasubramanian, were among those present.
