False certificates: tribal outfit gets into agitation mode

Staff Reporter

Action demanded against elected panchayat members

Tension prevails in Kandhamal district

Bid to pacify agitators fails

BERHAMPUR: Tension is mounting in Kandhamal district with the tribal organisation, Kui Samaj, pressing upon the administration to take action against elected panchayat body members, who allegedly used false caste certificates.

Their first target is the Siris Mallik, the sarpanch of the Kurtamgad panchayat of Tumudibandh block, who according to them has been elected by producing false caste certificate. The administration is handicapped as the case related to the allegation is pending with the Orissa High Court. The tribals have threatened not let the panchayat office function till the sarpanch is removed from his post. The Kandhamal SP and ADM tried to pacify the situation through a peace committee on Sunday, but the effort failed. It is suspected that the Kui Samaj activists may take up similar agitation at some other panchayats also. The Kui Samaj has alleged that non-tribals of the district have been using dubious means to get tribal certificates to get facilities meant for scheduled tribes. It was also a major reason behind communal tension in the district in December last. The State government has promised action against non-tribals of the district, who allegedly used forged tribal certificates.

The administration has recommended the State government to take action against 53 persons of the district who allegedly used false tribal caste certificates to get government jobs.

Convention held

But according to the convenor of the Kui Samaj, Lambodar Kanhar Kui Samaj, there are a lot of non-tribal politicians in the district who got elected in panchayat elections from the areas reserved for tribals using false caste certificates. In the convention of the Kui Samaj held last week, the tribals held discussion on the issue and demanded action against on the issue.
