Unsafe journey

Fishermen of fishermen at Pamban, Mandapam and Rameswaram take tourists and pilgrims on a merry ride into the rough sea in their country boats without possessing necessary safety kits such as life-jackets. Most of these boats are operated by persons who are not duly trained to deal with emergency situations that may arise during such journey. There is no limit for the number of passengers also. What happened at Thirumurthi Hill Falls near Udumalpet recently is an eye-opener. It is the duty of the Government and the district administration to take stern and effective steps to regulate fishing or other boats carrying the public into the sea in Rameswaram island. The Government itself, through its tourism department, could run diesel boats fixing a nominal fare with required facilities to promote tourism in this region.

Train link to Madurai from Rameswaram

Gauge conversion work between Manamadurai and Karaikudi section has been completed. I hope that train service will resume from July onwards. The Railway authorities have decided to divert the Rameswaram-Chennai Express via Karaikudi route.

I appeal to the railway authorities to operate a train service between Rameswaram and Chennai via Madurai.

V.Rajendran,

Paramakudi.

Drop revision of property tax

The Ramanathapuram Municipality has proposed to enhance the property tax for houses by 25 per cent from April 2008. This increase will badly affect the house owners who are poor and poverty-stricken. Instead of squeezing the hapless house owners the Municipality can explore the possibilities of earning income from other sources.

It may not be out of place to mention that the Chief Minister had already announced that the revision of property tax by the Municipalities was not a compulsory one and would be their discretion.

Hence the Ramanathapuram Municipality should stop forthwith the revision of property tax for houses.

G. Nagasamy,

Secretary, Consumer Welfare Association, Ramanathapuram.
