Tender for Chennai city will be floated soon ACTVC has also come forward to provide set-top boxes CHENNAI: When the Tamil Nadu government decided to intervene in the cable TV sector, there was much chaos in the market, born of disputes between multi-system operators (MSOs) and last-mile cable operators (LCOs). The State’s venture Arasu Cable TV Corporation Ltd (ACTVC) will serve as both MSO (in the city) and LCO (for the State). The Corporation has decided to set up digital control rooms in four locations in the State — Coimbatore, Thanjavur, Vellore and Tirunelveli — to provide high-quality services to end-users or TV audiences at a reasonable cost. Thomson Grass Valley of France has been asked to set up the digital control rooms and they are importing digital head-ends which would distribute signals. The tender for Chennai city would be floated soon. “There are several MSOs in the State. The ACTVC is also going to be one of them and will provide direct digital feed to LCOs. That is why we are putting up our four digital control rooms. The distance between each digital control room is around 250-300 km,” said ACTVC chairman and managing director Brijeshwar Singh. He also said it was the Corporation’s mandate to ensure transparency and stability in operations and transmission. If there is a deficiency in service, the customer can complain to the ACTVC. Complaints can be made with regard to LCOs overcharging the customer than the prescribed rate, disruption in service for a long time, and the like. The ACTVC has also come forward to provide set-top boxes and cable connection to the consumers directly, if the local cable operator does not sign up with the ACTVC. “We are an MSO and can provide direct link to any customer for which we are laying optic fibre cables all over the State,” Mr. Singh added.
