RS, Council polls: unanimous election of party candidates likely

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: All candidates fielded by the BJP, the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) for the Rajya Sabha and the Legislative Council elections are expected to be unanimously elected as the number of candidates fielded by these parties match the vacancies.

Two independents for the Rajya Sabha and one for the Legislative Council have also filed their nomination papers, but without the requisite number of MLA proposers as required. The results are expected to be announced on Wednesday, which is the last day for withdrawal of nominations. The scrutiny of nominations will take place on Tuesday.

Sources in the Congress and the Janata Dal (S) said a final understanding between the two parties was clinched around noon on Monday. Following the agreement, the JD (S) will extend support to the Congress in the Rajya Sabha poll while the latter will extend support to the JD (S) in the Legislative Council polls. Further, the Congress has also given a Legislative Council seat to the JD (S) in return.

While the BJP fielded former Governor Rama Jois and former Congress MLC Prabhakar Kore for the Rajya Sabha, the Congress has fielded Mr. Krishna and former MLA Anil Lad.

For the Legislative Council, the BJP has fielded V.S. Acharya, Shankarappa, Bharathi Shetty and Siddaraju. The Janata Dal (S) has fielded M.C. Nanaiah and K.V. Narayanaswamy, and the Congress has fielded the former Union Minister, M.V. Rajasekharan.

An independent, Sudhakar, has also filed nomination papers for the Council.

With filing of nominations for the elections drawing to a close on Monday, the nomination papers of six candidates for four seats of the Rajya Sabha and of eight candidates for seven seats of the Legislative Council were received by the Returning Officer.
