Udhagamandalam: Some of the hoteliers, club managers, tea traders, educationists in this hill station are now a little more familiar with the functioning of the tea industry and what it has to offer, thanks to a tea tasting session organised at the Glendale Group’s Tea Lounge here on Monday. Though many are aware of the fact that it is the taster who describes and values teas by following a complex procedure, not many outside the tea industry have actually witnessed it. The Executive Director, Glendale, G. Udayakumar told The Hindu that the aim behind organising the event for a select group of people associated with the hospitality sector was to show how tea can be effectively used to promote tourism. The Nilgiris Hotels and Restaurants Association president, Sanjeev Sharma while welcoming the Tea Lounge concept said that the health aspects of tea should be promoted. L. Varadharaj of the Tea Museum lamented that even many of those born in the land of tea were ignorant of its several ‘avatars.’ Adverting to the days when the teas grown in the Nilgiris were patronised even by members of British Royalty, he felt that events which added value to the Nilgiri tea should be encouraged. The concept should be extended to places like Coimbatore. Tea taster Ramaswamy explained ways to distinguish the good teas from the average and the bad. The Tea Lounge, which came into being a little more than a month ago to popularise the teas manufactured by Glendale and in the process promote Nilgiris brand is the first of its kind in the district.
