HYDERABAD: Election authorities in Andhra Pradesh have commenced a programme to update the photo electoral rolls in an exercise to prepare the ground for the next general elections. The Election Commission asked the State authorities to cover all eligible voters, numbering 5.5 crore, with photo identity cards by next elections. It is contemplating to make voter identity card mandatory for exercising the franchise during the next general elections. The photo roll programme which includes issual of voter photo identity card to the eligible voters, was taken up as a pilot project in Hyderabad and 84.74 per cent of the voters are covered so far. In the rest of the State, the programme was taken up in April last, but avoided for the 10 districts where byelections were held recently. The Election Commission has fixed September 30 as the deadline for publication of the rolls in these districts. WebsiteChief Electoral Officer I. V. Subba Rao stated at a press conference here on Monday that the draft photo electoral rolls would be published after corrections, inclusions and deletions on September 5 for the 10 districts and on July 23 for others. He said people could verify whether their names were included in the rolls by contacting the toll-free phone 1100 or by accessing the website ( www.ceoandhra.nic.in ). For fresh inclusions, eligible voters should approach the designated photograph location centres set up in each Assembly constituency. MeetingMr. Rao said he had convened a meeting of civil society organisations, non-governmental organisations, ward committees, colony welfare associations on June 21 in respect of covering remaining voters in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation areas.
