dated June 17, 1958: Dock workers’ strike

Dock workers in the country’s five major ports stopped work at midnight on June 16 in response to the call given by the All-India Port and Dock Workers’ Federation. The ports affected are Bombay, Calcutta, Madras, Cochin, and Visakhapatnam, according to official sources in Bombay. The strike is to back up the federation’s demand for implementation of the Choudhury Committee’s recommendations for better pay scales and service conditions for dock workers.
