Chennai: K. Suresh of Tiruvarur District shocked eighth seed and former State champion K. Gunasekaran of Thiruvallur district to steal the show in the Tamil Nadu State chess championship at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium here on Monday. K. Suresh, the under-12 boy won a marathon 78-move encounter in an opposite colour bishop ending with the black pieces to cause the day’s biggest upset. Top seed International Master G.B. Prakash of Indian Bank who is listed as ‘Grand Master’ by FIDE in its official site now said that it could be an input mistake by FIDE and he could be addressed as ‘holder of four GM Norms’. He has to reach the 2500-rating mark when the coveted GM title will be awarded. In his opener, Prakash won quite easily in 37 moves with the black pieces after Balakrishnan faltered losing a rook for minor piece and pawns from a French defence. Important results (round one): R. Balakrishnan (NLC) lost to G.B. Prakash (IB), B.T. Muralikrishnan (Rly) bt Amish Kushal (Tnv), Mugil Jayavel (Che) lost to Sudhakar Babu (IB), Shyam Nikhil (Mdu) bt V. Lakshmanan (Cbe). I. Karunakaran lost to D.P. Singh (Rly), Preetham Sharma (Rly) lost to (walk over) K. Manickam (Cud), S. Yogit (Che) lost to R. Ashwath (Che), K. Gunasekaran (Tvlr) lost to K. Suresh (Trr), R. Balasubramaniun (Che) bt M. Karthikeyan (Che), M. Akash (Che) lost to V. Hariharan (IB).
