Sub Registrar office raided
Special Correspondent
TAMBARAM: Personnel of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption conducted a raid on the premises of the Sub Registrar office in Tambaram on Monday and seized unaccounted cash amounting to about Rs. 50,000.
The personnel came to the office premises around 6.45 p.m. and after more than two hours, told journalists they were conducting the raid following a tip-off from Sriram, a Choolaimedu-based builder. He had purchased a property under the jurisdiction of the Tambaram Sub Registrar office and came there to register it more than three months ago. As staff at the office allegedly demanded money more than the actual registration cost, he did not go ahead with the transaction. Meanwhile, he lodged a complaint with the DVAC at its Adyar office and personnel there laid a trap.
He was asked to walk into the office and hand over the cash to staff. The builder followed the instructions and the DVAC personnel trooped into the office and caught one of the staff accepting the money. The DVAC personnel said they conducted a thorough audit of the office records and concluded that about Rs. 50,000 cash was in excess of the actual transactions made in the office on Monday. An officer said an employee was arrested and another detained.
