Bangalore
700 and counting
Special Correspondent
Bangalore: Kamagere Krishnegowda was elated when he found four new Kannada magazines in a shop in the Majestic area during his recent visit to Bangalore.
The magazines were special because they took the total count of Kannada magazines and newspapers in his unusual collection to 700.
Krishnegowda, who works in the Irrigation Department in Ramanagar, has been collecting Kannada newspapers and magazines since 1971.
The collection includes both well-known ones with a State-wide circulation and those that cater specifically to a small hobli or taluk.
“My father was an avid reader of newspapers and I also took to reading them early. Whenever I came upon an unusual publication I wondered if it would go undocumented. I decided to do something about it and started collecting them,” says Mr. Krishnegowda.
“Some of them have stopped publication now,” he adds.
After a Kannada newspaper published an article about him, several people even started sending him rare publications by post.
Mr. Krishnegowda has filed them all in an alphabetical order and maintains a ledger of names.
One comes across some unusual names in his collection such as “Ramanagara Simha”, “Khaki, Kavi, Khadi” and “Yamaloka”.
“I want to keep on adding new ones to my collection as long as I can,” says Mr. Krishnegowda.
