550 portable pumps for de-watering operations

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: In view of the early arrival of the monsoon in the Capital, officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi will now have to personally supervise de-watering operations in water-logged areas.

At a review meeting on Monday, MCD Standing Committee Chairman Vijender Gupta said the civic body officials had been provided with 550 portable de-watering pumps to take care of vulnerable points across the city.

Mr. Gupta said: “Apart from water-logging, there is over 10,000 cubic metric tonnes of silt in various drains. To dispose of this silt, additional labour is being engaged to carry it to sanitary landfill sites. Twenty additional trucks are also being handed over to the Deputy Commissioners for this purpose.”

Mr. Gupta informed that 12 mobile units fitted with submersible pumps and generator sets had been deployed to attend to complaints of water-logging from unauthorised colonies. He identified 12 susceptible points where work is to be undertaken by the Public Works Department, Delhi Jal Board and Delhi Development Authority.

These points include the water treatment plant at Loni; Azadpur Metro railway flyover; from Munirka to Vasant Vihar; Madhuban Chowk; Punjabi Bagh flyover; Dhaula Kuan flyover; and Dwarka to Airport flyover.

Mr. Gupta said he had written to Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit requesting her to direct the PWD to take necessary action to ensure that water-logging does not take place.
