TIRUCHI: The expanded Central Bus Stand in the city is to be opened soon as the works, except for the construction of a two-wheeler parking lot, have been completed.

The bus stand is likely to be formally opened during the last week of this month when the Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi is expected to visit the city.

The Tiruchi Corporation has invested about Rs.3.49 crore for expanding the bus stand following the acquisition of about 1.16 hectares of adjoining Railway lands.

The civic body had acquired the land paying a compensation of Rs.5.66 crore to the Railways.

The project was conceived by the Corporation in an attempt to ease the congestion in the bus stand, originally spread over an area of about 4.5 acres.

The work commenced in June 2006, but the progress had been rather slow. Though the Corporation had originally planned to spend only about Rs.2.14 crore, various additional amenities were included as the project took off.

The expanded bus stand would have 33 additional bays, taking the total to 76 with the extension of three platforms. New bus shelters have also been erected in front of the bus stand complex, where city bus halts are situated.

The public toilets have been demolished to construct new ones. A new multi-level two-wheeler parking lot is also under construction. The two-wheeler parking lot functioning on the VOC Road would be shifted to the new building soon.

The expanded bus stand will have entrance and exit on VOC Road so that buses bound for Dindigul Road need not go through Royal Road and Collector’s Office Road.

A link road between V.O.C. Road and Periamilaguparai Road that leads to the Dindigul National Highway has also been planned
