Tough tax hike

The proposed hike of house tax by the Corporation may induce house owners to increase the house rent considerably which will affect mostly the middle class people and senior citizens and pensioners . The Corporation authorities are requested to consider this issue on humanitarian grounds. Instead, they can increase the taxes on industries and cinema theatres, educational institutions and private nursing homes

Pig menace

Stray pigs are roaming freely in and around Senthanneerpuram and Sangiliandapuram and they cause nuisance to road users, particularly two-wheeler riders. At times, two-wheelers tend to skid when the pigs cross the road all of a sudden. Even though sheds are provided for these pigs, their owners let them free. I request the Corporation authorities to take necessary action.

Idle trains

Coaches of Rockfort Express are lying idle after reaching Chennai and Tiruchi early in the morning. The coaches can be sent to Chennai from Tiruchi and to Tiruchi from Chennai about 10 a.m. so that public can reach their destinations in the summer season.

Ratan Chand Jain,

Tennur.

Resume trains

It is more than two years since the train traffic was suspended on the Tiruvarur-Nagapattinam section for BG conversion works. Reports pointed out that the track laying work had been completed. But the Railways is keeping mum on when the trains will be operated. The non-availability of trains is causing much discomfort to senior citizens, sick and women and children. I request the Railways to run trains in the Tiruvarur–Nagapattinam section immediately.

D. Rajeswari,

Nagapattinam.

Late running

I travelled on a special Nagercoil-Mysore Express recently from Nagercoil to Tiruchi. The departure time for the train at Nagercoil was 14.45 hrs. The train left Nagercoil at 15.45 hrs. After giving way to all trains in both directions, the train reach Tiruchi Junction at 3.15 hrs on the next day against its arrival time of 22.25 hrs. This delay causes hardship. Imagine the fate of passengers waiting at Tiruchi Junction from 22.25 hrs for their journey to Bangalore/ Mysore.

A. R. Samuel,

Tiruverambur

Subway congestion

There is only one subway in Tiruchi Junction which is invariably crowded. When trains arrive, it becomes difficult to come out with luggage from platforms 2 and 4 to platform 1 exit. Previously when Rockfort Express was run on metre gauge, there used to be a walk way between platforms at the southern end. This was very helpful. Now that there is a provision for a level crossing at the Northern end of platform 1, this may please be restored for the convenience of all.

Song is wrong

I would like to point out a glaring mistake in one of the Dasavatharam songs “Mukunda Mukunda”. In the original Dasavatharam, Lord Vishnu was the saviour of the Earth in Varaha Avataram and not in Koorma Avataram as mentioned in the song. This needs to be corrected.

Ramaprasad,

Number portability

The government’s announcement on the introduction of “number portability” allowing the subscribers to change their service providers without changing their mobile numbers is a welcome move and subscribers can switch to a network of best service and technology.

C. Ramalingam,

Price rise pinches

People are really unfortunate. They have to meet the hike of petrol, diesel and cooking gas cylinder again and again. The price of all commodities are very high. The Central Government shows interest in the price hike of all commodities and fuels. The same interest is not shown in implementing the Sixth Pay Commission report. It is not fair to increase the price again without doing any favour to the employees. Janakimaindhan S. Raj,

O.F.T. Estate.

Phone trouble

Formerly, when the telephone is faulty, the caller could not hear the dial tone. He would inform the telephone department that he could not contact the number. The telephone department attends to the fault. But now when the telephone does not work, the caller cannot know that the phone at the other end is at fault because he hears the dial tone. Lack of response by the receiver creates a misunderstanding in him The caller should be in a position to notice the defect of the instrument at the receiving side.

S. Sridhar,

Woraiyur.

Disturbing

The Tiruchi police warns all car and van drivers not to stop their vehicles at NSB Road or Big Bazar Street. Those who don’t follow the rules are punished. However, recently our Chief Minister’s birthday was celebrated by disturbing traffic and creating noise pollution from a shop owned by the ruling party men.

K. Venkatesan,

Rockfort Agraharam.

Narrow bridges

The railway overbridges near Tiruchi Railway Junction, Fort Station Road and Tiruvanai Kovil are very old and narrow and do not meet present day needs.

We have been repeatedly requesting to widen these bridges.

M. Sekaran,

Converner, Federation of Service Organisations

Vehicle pooling

Yet another hike in the fuel prices has put the common man in a fix. Public can adopt the practice of pooling vehicles with like minded people and use cycle for short distance travel.

If a place is available for parking the vehicle and frequency of buses are more, most of the residents will prefer public mode of transport.

With regard to operating additional buses, Government can relax its norm and introduce mini buses to cover short distance junction points.

In the national interest, fuel conservancy can be achieved and CO 2 emission can be reduced.

P.K. Raman,

Ayyappa Nagar.

What for autorickshaw meters

Gone are the days when we complained about doctored meters in autorickshaws. Now we are back to square one in that we have to get the fare fixed before hiring an auto.

Hence, what is the use of electronic meter? So long as the authorities do not care to enforce discipline among the autorickshaw drivers, there is no point in talking about the meter at all.

P. David,

Teppakulam.

Sand on bridge

This is to bring to the immediate attention of the authorities about huge accumulation of sand on Kudamurutti bridge posing a veritable threat to users of two-wheelers and cycles.

The NH-67 stretch is a high density traffic stretch and a lot of heavy vehicles pass through the bridge.

Two wheeler riders and cyclists have to give way to the heavy vehicles at considerable risk of skidding. The authorities should take prompt action in removing the sand
