“Can a girl pursue mechanical engineering or aeronautical engineering?”, “Can I do physiotherapy as I am a girl”, these were just some of the questions that were asked by girl students at the recent counselling workshop conducted by The Hindu recently. In an age where girls are demanding equal rights, it is sad that girls still consider themselves as the ‘weaker sex’. Another noticeable feature was that today’s students placed more emphasis on the salary package than on their passion or interests apart from planning a bit too ahead for their post-graduation. Doesn’t anyone believe in the saying “Cross the bridge when you reach the bridge” anymore? What is the barometer of a successful career? Some gauge it by rank, and most others by the pay packet or income one makes in a profession. When either of the above two factors become the all-encompassing concern for making a career choice with the ‘gender’ factor also thrown in, rather than one’s own aptitude and bent of mind, it indeed becomes a tough task for a Plus 2 student to make up his/her mind to zero in on a career. This increasing dilemma of students and their parents was evident at the Career Guidance workshop organised by The Hindu the other day for EAMCET rankers. The recent observation of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day by Heritage Foundation saw participation from a number of septua, octa and nonagenarians that included the former Director of NIMS Kakarla Subbarao and Justice Rangarajan. However, the one to walk away with everyone’s heart was an old woman Shakuntala, who redefined the concept of abuse by quoting an example. Relating her recent visit to a friend in the U.S.A. who always complained notwithstanding the comforts bestowed by her children, she said abuse could be in many ways such as being confined to home with least interaction with other members of the family. The friend, she said, despite having two servants at her disposal, longed for home in her village where people needed her and had time to spend with her. Quite an example to reiterate that ‘money does not bring happiness’! Hyderabad is shining! If you have any doubt, read this. A single wine shop from Madhapur fetched over Rs. 2 crore in the form of licence fee for two years for the government in the auctions held on Tuesday. To pay such huge amount, daily sales of the wine shop should be above Rs. 2 lakh on an average. Several other wine shops also fetched equally good amounts. The mind blowing figures naturally give an impression that the city is flourishing albeit on li quor sales front. Students of government schools are considered no match to their counterparts in the corporate schools. But this notion was proved wrong the other day when the Ranga Reddy District authorities felicitated top SSC scorers of government schools in the district who were selected for admission to IIIT programme. Several boys and girls aired their views and freely interacted with district Collector Danam Kishore. The latter was surprised at their fluency and clear flow of though t. Given a little encouragement they are second to none, sure. The very thought of appearing on a television screen can make people change their wardrobe, looks and much more. However, there are people who will not relax with just these changes; they strive to go that extra mile to look elegant on TV. Such is the craze for appearing ‘neat’ on the idiot box, especially those news channels, that a transport official recently refurbished his entire chambers from scratch. What years of persuasion from many could not change the government officials in maintaining their chambers neat and chic; it appears that a camera has done it in a flash. D.V.L. PADMA PRIYA M. L.
