A lot of activity is seen on the campus The appointment of new V-C is awaited by all GUNTUR: Acharya Nagarjuna University College reopened on Monday, but majority of the students did not turn up, some still looking forward to an auspicious day to begin the new academic year. None of the mess rooms in hostels was reopened and all the departments looked deserted. There was a lot of activity with students’ union/associations putting up tents to welcome the students and the counselling process continuing, the classes for the students in the First semester was likely to begin on July 1. Meanwhile, entire university community waits with bated breath for the appointment of new Vice-Chancellor with in-charge Vice Chancellor Y.R. Haragopala Reddy being the forerunner among the contenders for the post. The search committee met last week and that for the Andhra University met on Monday to zero in on the candidate. While the search committee for these universities had met, the Government Order on creation of six new State universities was yet to be issued, though the StateCabinet had taken a decision to this effect by amending the A.P. Universities Act 1991. The universities were to come up in Kurnool, Karimnagar, Krishna, Mehboobnagar, Srikakulam and Nellore districts and six professors were waiting to be appointed Vice-Chancellors. All these universities were supposed to offer courses from the 2008-09 academic year. Also being looked forward to is the trifurcation of JNTU with two or three of its colleges given Central University status.
