KOLLAM: A group of tipsy youngsters in a sports utility vehicle who took the Kakathope beach here for a racetrack had a narrow escape on Tuesday afternoon. They drove film-style through the waves that crashed on the beach. But they were at the wrong place. The Kakathope beach is notorious for being unpredictable, especially during the monsoon. As they stepped on the gas, up came a breaker that swirled the vehicle and sucked it towards the sea. By sheer luck, the vehicle got stuck in the sand and stayed put as the wave retreated. Those inside the wagon jumped out for their lives and fell back. Though more waves hit the vehicle, it stayed there. And that posed another problem — retrieving the vehicle that got stuck in the sand. The group was too weak for it. Soon, the local people gathered and extended a helping hand.
