Belgaum
Close down or shift the shops, says mahila mandal Belgaum: Members of the Sri Durgashambhavi Mahila Mandal staged a demonstration in front of Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Tuesday, in protest against liquor shops being allowed to come up near educational institutions, hospitals and religious places in of the city. Such shops had become a nuisance, and were making an adverse impact on people, especially youth in the area, they said. In a memorandum submitted to the Deputy Commissioner, mahila mandal leaders pointed out that the Supreme Court had directed all State Governments to ensure that no liquor shop was allowed within a radius of 100 m. from education institutions, hospitals and religious places. Such shops should either be closed down or be shifted to places away from schools, colleges, hospitals and places of worship, they said. The administration had not been able to distribute ration cards to all the deserving families, particularly those in Vadgaon, Shahpur and Khasbag. Several memorandums had been submitted in this regard, they said. The women criticised the economic policies of the Centre, which they said, had resulted in the steep increase in prices of fuel and essential commodities. The protest was led by mandal president Suvarna Mangaluru.
