Residents oppose move to mine iron ore in reserve forest lands

Show of strength: Residents of various villages staging a dharna in Salem on Tuesday demanding information under the Right to Information Act from the Forest Department regarding the proposal to hand over forest lands to a private firm. —

SALEM: Residents from a cluster of villages located at the foothills of Kanjamalai staged a dharna here on Tuesday in protest against the move to mine iron ore in reserve forest lands in and around Kanjamalai near here.

Proposals

Urging the Forest Department to furnish details regarding the proposed handing over of 638 hectares of reserve forest land to Tamil Nadu Iron Ore Mining Corporation Ltd. (TIMCO) for an iron ore project under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, they also submitted applications seeking information such as the proposals made by the TIMCO, a joint venture of Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation and Jindal Vijayanagar Steel Limited, and other companies.

The inspections carried out by the officials of the Forest Department and other departments concerned and their recommendations should also be made public they demanded and sought reports regarding the environmental impact due to mining activities and the impact of mining on the fields located near the forest lands.

Residents also appealed to the officials to allow them to go through the documents permitting the company for mining in the Kanjamalai reserve forest.
