30 p.c of ryots freed from private money lenders, says Dharmana

MACHILIPATNAM: Claiming that over 30 per cent of farmers had been freed from the clutches of private money lenders every year during the last four years, Revenue Minister Dharmana Prasada Rao on Tuesday said Andhra Pradesh topped the States in the country that disbursed maximum loans to farmers.

Addressing a meeting in Zilla Parishad hall with bankers to finalise the modalities of implementation of loan waiver scheme, the Minister said the total sum distributed to farmers towards loans between 1947 and 2003 was only Rs. 9,000 crores, whereas the Congress Government had given loans to the tune of Rs. 22,650 crores in the last four years.

“Over 39 lakh farmers have been relieved of the necessity of taking private loans in the last four years and now we have taken up waiver of loans. For implementing this scheme, we are conducing ‘Runa Vimukti Melas’ (loan waiver fairs) for a week from July 8 in all Assembly constituencies,” he explained.

During the mela, certificates of loan waiver would be given to all the eligible farmers. Mr. Rao said the farmers could avail themselves of farm loans facility from July 1. Nandigama MLA Devineni Umamaheswara Rao urged the Minister to extend the loan waiver scheme to farmers whose loans were rescheduled since 1997. Ministers Pinnamaneni Venkateswara Rao, Koneru Ranga Rao, Collector Shailaja Ramaiyer, MP Badiga Ramakrishna, MLAs B. Veda Vyas, Meka Venkata Pratapa Appa Rao, Perni Venkatramaiah (Nani), MLCs Paladugu Venkata Rao, Y.V.B. Rajendra Prasad and ZP chairman K. Nageswara Rao and others were present.
