Doctor’s murder baffles police

PUNE: The brutal murder of a leading city cardiologist here has baffled the police as money does not seem to be a motive behind the crime.

According to the police, Rs.5,000 in cash was found near the body of Dr. Vijay Ghaisas, 68, when they arrived on the scene.

Judging by the marks on the body, the police said Dr. Ghaisas might have resisted when his assailants attacked him.

Preliminary investigation has shown that the murderers had not taken anything away from the two-storey house. Dr. Ghaisas was found murdered in his bungalow in the posh Prabhat Road locality in the Deccan area of the city on Monday morning. The assailants fled after forcing the maidservant, Vithabai, into the bathroom.

Immediately after the assailants fled, the maid alerted a doctor in the neighbourhood who found Dr. Ghaisas lying dead in a pool of blood with several stab wounds, the police said.

The doctor was alone in the house at the time. His wife, who is a writer, has gone to the US to stay with their daughter. -- PTI
