Soul of Islam

The article “War for the soul of Islam in India” (June 11) and the subsequent letters have taken the discourse on Muslims to a new level. Indian Muslims are a much-maligned religious minority. The demolition of the Babri mosque and the Gujarat pogrom were difficult chapters in our country’s history. But there is no wisdom in reopening the old wounds. The Deoband’s fatwa denouncing the jihadists is welcome. The affirmation of secular humanism is in tune with the times.

That Muslim leaders are addressing the aberrations that have dogged Islam owing to wrong interpretations is a good sign indeed. All religions have gone through a turbulent phase until progressive leaders entered the scene. Hinduism, for instance, has been faulted for the caste baggage it carries. But leaders like Mahatma Gandhi addressed the issue till our politicians, in their interest, brought things back to square one.

J.V. Reddy,
