MYSORE: Mysore City Corporation (MCC) will soon take up revision of voters’ list by involving members of booth-level committees of municipal wards.

Described as the first of its kind exercise to be taken up by a city municipal corporation in the State, the revision of voters’ list will be launched on a pilot basis in three wards of the MCC soon and subsequently the remaining wards coming under Chamaraja, Narasimharaja and Krishnaraja Assembly constituencies will be covered.

The corporation has selected a “developed” ward, an “underdeveloped” ward and a “poorly developed” ward to launch the exercise through door-to-door visits. Based on the feedback and corrections, if necessary, the exercise will be taken up in the remaining wards.

The exercise was planned following widespread complaints of missing names in the voters’ list during the recent elections. Many registered voters had complained that they had been deprived of the right to exercise their franchise as either their names were missing in the list or the details were faulty.

Under the pilot exercise, revision of voters’ list will be taken up in K.R. Mohalla (Ward No. 1), Saraswathipuram (Ward No. 20) and B.B. Keri (Ward No. 42). Corporators of these wards have been informed about the arrangements to be made for “foolproof” revision of the list.

Sources in the MCC said that besides members of the booth committees, constituted for effective implementation of projects under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission when P. Manivannan was the Commissioner of the corporation, leaders and deputy leaders of the booths and prominent citizens of each ward would be involved in the exercise to ensure a “fault-free” revision of the voters’ list.

Door-to-door visits would be taken up for five days in each ward to rectify errors, the sources said and added that names that had been left out would be added to the list and names of bogus voters would be deleted.

However, concerns are being expressed over the involvement of political representatives in the exercise.

Talking to The Hindu, Mayor Ayub Khan clarified that involvement of elected representatives would not have any “political influence” on the exercise.

“Once the list is prepared, officials of the corporation will cross verify the names by visiting the residences of the voters. There will be no room for any manipulation as the final report will be screened by a team of officials,” he said.

Citizens and representatives of non-governmental organisations in those wards can take part in the exercise to ensure voting rights to genuine voters. “Their involvement is crucial for us,” he said.

According to the corporation, there are 607 booths in the three Assembly segments in Mysore.

The district administration carried out revision of voters’ list before the elections. However, many registered voters could not exercise their franchise because their names were missing in the list. It was noticed that names of several bogus voters had been included in the list, following which the Election Commission of India directed for fresh revision.
