Aviation varsity mooted at Begumpet airport
HYDERABAD: The State government is planning to set up an aviation university in the Begumpet airport that has become non-functional following the opening of the international airport at Shamshabad.
The aviation university, to be named after former Chief Minister N.T. Rama Rao, will be developed into a world class institution. Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy is expected to take up the matter with the Civil Aviation Ministry during his two-day visit to New Delhi on June 18 and 19.
The decision assumes significance in the light of Telugu Desam Party’s criticism of the Congress government for not naming a terminal in the Shamshabad airport after N.T. Rama Rao. The domestic terminal at the Begumpet airport was named after NTR. Dr. Reddy is expected to seek expeditious clearance as well as the Centre’s help for the proposed institution.
The Chief Minister, who is on his first visit to the national capital after the byelections in Telangana, will hold discussions with Congress president Sonia Gandhi about the political situation in the State. Dr. Reddy will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and several Union Ministers during his visit to seek the Centre’s help in speedy completion of various projects in the State.
