New Delhi: While the Manmohan Singh government wishes to press ahead with the Indo-U.S. civilian nuclear deal by going to the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency, the Left on whose support the government depends for survival has let it be known that its opposition to the deal remains unchanged. Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury confirmed this on the eve of a decisive meeting of the United Progressive Alliance and Left coordinating committee that will be held on June 18: “There has been no change in our position. It is up to the government to try to convince us to make us change our stand.” On Monday night, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee had a lengthy discussion on the contentious issues with Prakash Karat, general secretary of the CPI(M). What is clear is that no resolution of the basic differences is in sight. I cannot say anything now: PranabPTI reports from Dehra Dun: Asked to comment on what happened at the meeting, Mr. Mukherjee told journalists that he could not say anything at this juncture. The Minister, who came here to inaugurate a passport office in Uttarakhand, declined to take more questions on the issue.
