Bangalore: Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa on Tuesday announced the construction of two high speed corridors — Hebbal to Madiwala (16 km) and Kodihalli to Kundalahalli (12 km) — to enable fast motor traffic movement in Bangalore. He held a nearly four-hour meeting with senior officials of the Bangalore Development Authority, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, the Bangalore Metropolitan Region Development Authority, the Karnataka Housing Board and the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board. The meeting focussed on improving infrastructure in Bangalore. Several Ministers representing Bangalore constituencies, Katta Subramanya Naidu, R. Ashok, Arvind Limbavalli and Shobha Karandlaje, were with the Chief Minister during the discussions. Briefing presspersons after the meeting, Mr. Yeddyurappa said apart from the two high speed corridors a section of the outer ring road, Central Silk Board Junction to Bellary Road Intersection, would be made traffic signal-free to ease flow of traffic on the outer ring road. On drinking water supply in Bangalore, the Chief Minister said the city’s water requirement is 1,219 million litres a day, while only 870 million litres a day are available. “To meet the shortfall of 40 per cent, the BWSSB has decided to recycle and treat used water. The project will be taken up in four phases. Water from five lakes, Nagavara, Kalkere, Bellandur, Kengeri and Vengainhakere, would be treated to potable levels,” he said. He said that the BDA had planned a peripheral ring road of 115 km, of which 65 km will form the first phase. “The land acquisition process has been completed and 1,900 acres have been acquired. The project, the cost of which is Rs. 3,000 crore, will be taken up in two phases,” he said. The BDA has proposed to build 92,000 flats measuring 3.25 squares each for the economically weaker sections of society. The cost of each flat would be Rs. 3 lakh. As much as 325 acres of land have been acquired for the project. The BDA has also proposed to create five new layouts with one of them now being formed. The layouts will be named after Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, Shivarama Karanth, S. Nijalingappa, Kengal Hanumanthaiya and K.C. Reddy. “As many as 1.74 lakh sites would be formed. The first layout, named after Kempegowda, will have 60,000 sites and 4,816 acres of land have been acquired for it,” he said. Mr. Yeddyurappa said that the high speed rail link to the Bengaluru International Airport has been sanctioned at a cost of Rs. 3,600 crore. Automated parking lots with space for 21,000 cars would be set up in 10 places. “We have also decided to expedite the work on the Metro Rail. Review meetings will be held every two months to access the progress,” he added.
