VIJAYAWADA: Andhra Chamber of Commerce and Industry chairman M. Rajaiah on Tuesday regretted that Andhra Pradesh had not found a place in the list of States for which the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development sanctioned an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) each recently. In a letter to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Mr. Rajaiah said an IIM had been sanctioned to the coastal districts of the State but it was dropped finally in view of competition from those who came out in support of Vijayawada and those who favoured Visakhapatnam. He pointed out that the new IIM was ultimately sanctioned for Tamil Nadu. Mr. Rajaiah demanded that Vijayawada be selected for setting up the new IIM to make up for the lack of development in the city and in view of the fact that successive Governments had not paid heed to its potential. He sought to dispel the notion that industrial development was not possible in the surroundings of Vijayawada due to lack of land. Pointing out that a world-class Central University was sanctioned for Visakhapatnam, Mr. Rajaiah said Vijayawada deserved a similar opportunity and the Government should consider it for setting up the new IIM.
