Striking LNJP doctors demand better infrastructure

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Medical services at Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Narayan Hospital here were affected on Tuesday after resident doctors and interns went on strike on Monday night protesting against lack of medical infrastructure, shortage of group C and D staff and inadequate security at the hospital. The striking doctors refused to get back to work till “the working conditions improved for doctors and better facilities were offered to patients”.

Stating that talks with the hospital authorities during the day had failed and that “nothing but more assurance alone was being offered to them”, LNJP Resident Doctors’ Association president Dr. Kuldeep Kumar said: “We have demanded that additional security be provided to the hospital staff and that the medical infrastructure and facility for patients be improved at the earliest. The doctors are also demanding that more medical staff be inducted to ensure that acute staff shortage at the hospital does not adversely affect patient care. We have so far been given only assurances and we need more action to be taken in the matter.”

While senior doctors at the hospital reported for work to ensure that patient services remained functional, the casualty and emergency services were not functioning to its full capacity. Most stable patients were referred to other hospitals and only serious patients were taken in on Tuesday.

Hopital work hit

Admitting that hospital work had been adversely hit with residents and interns on strike, the hospital’s Medical Superintendent, Dr. Swaraj Batra, said: “We are trying to ensure that patient care does not suffer. We are trying to arrange adequate security at the hospital and are also looking into the other demands of the doctors. We hope the situation improves soon and the doctors return to work.”
