TIRUCHI: The University Grants Commission has sanctioned a major research project in humanities and social sciences to Professor and Head of Department of Tamil at Bishop Heber College P. Subas Chandrabose. The project, with a fund of Rs. 4.89 lakh, will be on ‘A study of sea trade and activities in Sangam literature’. The project will explore the globalisation strategy that was in vogue during the Sangam era even earlier to the first century BC. The export of pepper from Chera kingdom, pearls from Pandya regime, paddy and cloth from the Chola region was a major business in the early times. Import of gold and horse from countries including Egypt, Greece and Rome had also been a prospective trade. The basic evidence for the globalised sea trade during the Sangam era was found in the travelogue The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, describing navigation and trading opportunities from ports like Berenice along the coast of the Red Sea, and others along Northeast Africa and India. The extensive study on the sea trade of the Sangam era will highlight the indepth knowledge of ancient Tamils in converting the sea trade into the most profitable business and a tool for globalisation.
