STATUS CHECK: Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam visits one of the wards in the Stanley Medical College and Hospital on Tuesday.

Chennai: Students of nursing in Stanley Medical College and Hospital have urged Health Minister M. R. K. Panneerselvam to provide better basic amenities.

The Minister, accompanied by Health Secretary V. K. Subburaj and Director of Medical Education T. P. Kalanidhi, inspected some of the hospital wards and training facilities on Tuesday.

Mr. Panneerselvam interacted with students of nursing, many of whom reside on campus.

The students said they lacked adequate safe drinking water.

Also, toilets were not cleaned regularly.

The students require bigger classrooms, as over 100 of them have to be seated in a single room.

The Minister also inspected a dilapidated building, the ground floor of which houses the cardiology wards.

The first floor has been vacated and the building would be demolished to make way for a new one, he said.

New hostel blocks for medical students of Stanley Medical College and Hospital would be built in two years, Mr. Panneerselvam said.

The proposed new buildings would be constructed with funds from the State government’s allocation of Rs. 100 crore for upgrading the hospital.

Mr. Subburaj said tenders had been floated for building projects worth Rs. 25 crore.
