KOLKATA: The Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI)-organised Players’ Championship will be held for the first time at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club course here from Wednesday. The four-day meet offers a prize fund of Rs. 30 lakh. All the prominent names of Indian professional golf will be vying for top honours. The field includes S.S.P. Chowrasia, Gaurav Ghei, Rahil Gangjee, Ashok Kumar, Mukesh Kumar, Rahul Ganapathy, Harendra Gupta, Arjun Singh, Digvijay Singh, Gaganjeet Bhullar and Feroz Ali Mollah among others. The PGTI initiative has ensured that the city hosts its first professional tournament in about two and a half years. Briefing the media on the occasion, Ajay Gupta, the Tour commissioner, said the association between the PGTI and the RCGC would be for an initial period of three years. He said the next championship venue could be Coimbatore in South. He said the tournament would be played in four centres, Chandigarh (North), Pune (West), Kolkata (East) and Coimbatore (South). Weather concernsThe only dampener to what could be an exciting tournament is the monsoon. The rains have set in a big way and the forecast for the next 48 hours is more rains. Mukesh Kumar of Mhow is the current leader in the Order of Merit. Chowrasia, the winner of Emaar-MGF Indian Masters in February, will be playing for the first time on his home course after the New Delhi triumph.
