NATION BUILDERS: K.K. Chandran with his drawings using aluminium wires. Mahatma Gandhi comes alive on black velvet through deftly twisted aluminium wires. Bhagat Singh and Sarojini Naidu too find a slot on canvas. K.K. Chandran decided to mark the 150th anniversary of India’s freedom struggle thus. There are 50 drawings in this collection, including those of nation builders, spiritual leaders, prime ministers and presidents. “I have begun drawing landscapes as well,” says Chandran. “The response to the series on freedom struggle has been encouraging. I will conduct an exhibition in Thiruvananthapuram in August. “The Malabar Christian College, Kozhikode, has also asked me to conduct an exhibition exclusively for it,” he said Chandran, a former Air Force employee from Vadakara, also uses more traditional mediums like oil paint. “Making a drawing using aluminium is of course much more challenging. It takes at least four days to complete one drawing.” This particular labour of love has taken him four years. Little wonder he chose the national freedom struggle as the topic for his most ambitious project yet — given his career in defence and his educational background (Chandran is a postgraduate in history). P.K. Ajith Kumar
