Debt waiver scheme for Punjab, Haryana finalised

Banks put aside 1,037 crore for Haryana, 608 crore for Punjab


Final amount of debt waiver for both states

to be released within couple of days

Scheme being monitored by RBI and Ministry

of Finance officials regularly


Chandigarh: Banks have so far finalised an amount of Rs.1,037 crore and Rs.608 crore as debt waiver and relief for Haryana and Punjab farmers respectively under the Agricultural Debt Waiver and Debt Relief Scheme 2008.

“Till yesterday [Tuesday], banks have identified debt waiver and relief amount of Rs.1,037 crore in case of Haryana involving 3.42 lakh accounts and Rs.608 crore representing 1.57 lakh accounts in Punjab,” said Convener of State Level Bankers Committee N.C. Jain while interacting with mediapersons here on Wednesday.

However, the final amount of debt waiver and relief for both Punjab and Haryana would be released within the next couple of days Mr. Jain, who is also the General Manager of Punjab National Bank, said. Giving the bank-wise detail regarding the maximum amount of waiver involved, he said State Bank of Patiala has highest amount of debt waiver which has been worked out at Rs.71.84 crore involving 19,000 accounts followed by PNB, having debt waiver of Rs.47 crore in 10,000 accounts.

Asserting that banks were fully geared up to meet the deadline for implementing the scheme, he said that all the banks in both the states would display the list of beneficiaries after June 20 as per stipulated by the Finance Ministry.

He further said that the officials of Reserve Bank of India and Ministry of Finance were monitoring the implementation of the scheme on a regular basis by visiting several branches in both the states. — PTI
