Focus will be on preventing accidents

Crusading for safety: Police participating in a road safety campaign in Udhagamandalam on Wednesday.

Udhagamandalam: The police in the district have been instructed to accord the highest priority to prevent accidents, according to the Superintendent of Police, the Nilgiris, A.G. Babu.

In a pressnote here on Wednesday, he said that as soon as he assumed charge early this month, he had ordered a crackdown on motorists who flouted road rules.

With the police stepping up their vigil, 933 cases relating to traffic violations had been registered over the last ten days.

It included 55 cases connected with drunken driving and 583 connected with over loading.

Many persons who were driving without license or driving in a reckless manner have also been booked.

Steps have been initiated to revoke the licence of persons driving while under the influence of alcohol.

He expressed the hope that motorists will help the police make the roads here safe.

Mr. Babu said that complainants should approach police stations without harbouring any kind of apprehension. If they are not satisfied with the response or the action taken, they could contact him in person or over phone 94421 63839.

The observance of the road safety awareness week has come in handy for the police in enforcing discipine on the roads.

With rallies being organised in different parts of the district, the police distributed handbills containing tips on safe driving at Charing Cross here on Wednesday.

They also pasted stickers bearing messages on vehicles. Among those who participated were the Additional Superintendent of Police, S. Munusu, and the Deputy Superintendent of Police, Nainar Mohammed.
