India has been witnessing economic mismanagement for quite some time now, said Wipro Chairman Azim Premji during an interaction with students of Aligarh Muslim University on Wednesday. “The Government that had been disciplined on economics so far has become irresponsible on economics as the elections are coming….There has been economic mismanagement in the country and that will make the task of the new Government even more difficult,” observed Mr. Premji. He was fielding questions from students after the 58th Annual Convocation Ceremony of AMU in Aligarh. Asked about the challenges his company faced while making its debut in the field of Information Technology, Mr. Premji said: “Establishing credibility in the field was one of our main challenges. Also, back then the industry was led by techies who did not understand business. We got a strong blend of people who understood business. We invested in our customers and established a company with a character and with high levels of integrity.” “I welcome cycles in business. You must not get lost in continuous success that brings huge amount of complacency. You must learn to lose and also to enjoy winning. If you are too cautious about making mistakes or losing, you will not achieve much. But when you do lose, do not lose the lesson,” he quipped. Mr. Premji pointed out that one thing which made successful leaders different from unsuccessful ones was their mature sense of wisdom. To students his advice was that every rupee earned was of “far more value” than five found: “Whatever comes to us through hard work and merit is by far more rewarding that any wealth that comes to us by luck, legacy or accident.” “Do not waste time and dissipate energy in [students’] union activities. Education is a very fine experience of one’s life. Do not get involved in issues not relevant to education,” he said in his trademark no-nonsense style drawing a huge applause from the audience.
