ALAPPUZHA: United Democratic Front (UDF) legislators K.C. Venugopal, B. Babu Prasad and K.K. Shaju have written to Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash Karat asking him to “rein in” Coir and Cooperation Minister G. Sudhakaran. In a joint statement here on Wednesday, the three legislators said the letter to Mr. Karat said that Mr. Sudhakaran was “misusing” his Cabinet post for “character assassination” of political rivals. The democratic courtesy, values and political etiquette that the CPI (M) insisted from its members were being “buried deep” by Mr. Sudhakaran, they alleged. Mr. Sudhakaran had on Tuesday alleged that the three legislators were acting as “mafia” and stalling developmental activities in Alappuzha. Demanding to know if the Minister’s statements had the patronage of the CPI(M), the legislators alleged that Mr. Sudhakaran’s recent speeches in which he allegedly “threatened to handle” the legislators had created law and order problems in the district, indirectly encouraging party workers to “unleash violence” on UDF and Youth Congress activists. Stating that they would file a defamation case against Mr. Sudhakaranfor terming them a “mafia”, the MLAs said they would lodge complaints with the Speaker.
